$2.00Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt (known as Ludwig Leichhardt) was born in Prussia, which is today part of Germany. He wanted to explore inland Australia and led an expedition from Brisbane to Port Essingdon, near Darwin. A later expedition, from Brisbane to Perth, across the interior, led to the disappearance of him and his party.

$2.00The American, Robert Peary, had a dream to be the first man to reach the North Pole. He approached this goal in increments, first exploring Greenland and learning how to survive in Arctic conditions from the indigenous Inuit people. His claim to have reached the North Pole in 1909 is controversial, as Peary did not provide any proof and his navigation may not have been completely accurate.
