Description

This resource examines the contribution of the Portuguese explorer, Bartolomeu Dias, who was the first European to sail around the Southern end of the African continent in 1488.

Dias opened the way for later European trade with the East and sea contact with Asia. Up to that time trade between Europe and the East had either gone through Arabia or by land across Asia.
