Description
Walter Raleigh was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I of England. She gave him a charter to explore and colonise on her behalf, but was reluctant for him to go in person. Raleigh therefore sponsored expeditions to sail in his name. One of these led to the establishment of the Roanoke colony – the first English colony in North America. The ultimate fate of the Roanoke colony is still being investigated by archaeologists. Raleigh did finally manage to do some exploring himself and visited South America, where one of his sons was shot in an incident that led to war between Spain and England. In this resource we discuss Walter Raleigh, his life and achievements.
