Description

George Vancouver, the man after whom the island of Vancouver, off the coast of British Columbia, is named, was born in Britain and served in the Royal Navy. He was part of negotiations with the Spanish to avoid war over Nootka Sound, where he was subsequently sent to reinforce the agreements reached. Vancouver mapped and surveyed the Canadian West coast in detail, but died in Britain fighting a legal battle against one of his men, who had formed a grudge against him.

His life, especially with respect to the island later named after him, is examined in this resource, aligned with Year 5 Australian Curriculum History, Geography and HASS.
