Description

This resource provides an overview of the history of the colony of Queensland, from the establishment of the convict settlement in 1824 to Federation.

The background of Aboriginal settlement in Queensland is briefly discussed, as is the exploration of the Queensland coast by John Oxley. The comparatively short-lived convict settlement is described, leading to a discussion of free settlement. Queensland’s separation from NSW, the effect of natural disasters and the key industries of sugar and coal are all covered in this resource. The politics of the late 19th century, leading to Federation, are also discussed.

Aimed primarily at the Year 5 Australian History curriculum, this resource complements other Australian History and Geography resources for Years 4, 5 and 6.
