This resource is part of our “Natural Disasters in Australia” series. One of the worst disasters of the early colonial period in Australia, and New South Wales, in particular, were the floods of the Murrumbidgee River of 1852. The township of Gundagai was almost destroyed and more than a third of the towns population perished in the floods. Some Aboriginal men became heroes, rescuing about one-fifth of the town’s population, in their bark canoes.
This resource examines the life and travels in North Africa of Heinrich Barth, who became the first European known to have crossed the Sahara Desert. People have lived in the Sahara Desert since the last Ice Age and trade routes have crossed it for thousands of years, however, the extreme climate makes the journey challenging, especially for those from more temperate climates.
This resource aligns with Year 3 and 4 Australian Curriculum History, Geography and HASS.
Part of our Federation series, this resource examines the life of Henry Parkes and his role in the politics of Australia, with a special focus on Federation.
Hernán Cortés was a conquistador in the truest sense of the word. He conquered the Aztecs in Mexico and created a new state which he called “New Spain”. Facing dissent from not only the indigenous people, but also fellow Spaniards, Cortés applied force to entrench his position. This resource examines his life and actions in Mexico, whilst providing an overview of the end of the Aztec Empire.
An understanding of systems of government and the franchise in Australia is best gained through examining the development of democracy since the colonial period. In this resource we examine democracy in Australia, from Aboriginal custom and law to the huge changes that occurred after Australia was colonised.
In 2004 the discovery of a new type of hominin of very small size on the island of Flores in Indonesia, was announced. Since then there has been much research into this hominin, its anatomy, dates, environment and lifestyle. Researchers have admitted that some of their early conclusions were wrong and have tested the evidence and changed their opinions. As a result, we are getting a very clear understanding of these distant cousins on the greater family tree.
As a commander of part of the fleet of the admiral Zheng He, Hong Bao undertook a voyage from China to Africa, through South-East Asia and along the Indian Ocean coast of Asia in the 15th century. This resource provides context, not only on the conditions in the region immediately prior to the arrival of Europeans, but also on the actions of Asian nations at the time. An alternate perspective on world history is provided by examining the actions of people of all of the world’s nations, including those of Asia.
Since implementing this program I've really noticed how the students are improving.
