Resource: Eureka Stockade

Description

The Eureka Stockade (and associated rebellion) is sometimes regarded as a fundamental step in the development of Australian democracy. The event represents Australia’s only violent conflict between Europeans and the colonial authorities. Based in the perceived injustices of the Victorian goldfields, these events had a broader result in terms of people’s representation in the government of the colony and set the stage for some of the democratic basis for Federation.
