Our soldering kit as used in OpenSTEM’s soldering programs! We source the individual components of these kits, and in some cases prepare and modify them.
This kit is specifically suited for students who, for instance after participating in one of our classroom programs, want to continue with soldering at home.
Contains
- 25W electronics soldering iron with standard conical tip. We test each iron through its initial heating cycle, and tin the tip ready for use. Standard Australian power plug.
- Solid metal stand with copper wire cleaning ball. Stable, safe, and easy to maintain.
- Set of “helping hands” for gripping circuit boards and holding up components, including an acrylic magnifying glass. We add strips of heat-shrink tubing on the clips to have a nice soft but firm grip.
- Roll of tin/lead rosin-core solder.
- Length of de-solder wick.
- Prototyping circuit board with header strip, for practice soldering.
- Blob of bluetac, to help hold components in place while soldering.
Note: all new items, prepared/modified as described above and hence not in their original packaging. Exact contents, colours and brands of items may differ. We ensure that the kits are functionally complete.
This kit does not include safety glasses, as your needs may vary. We use anti-fog, anti-scratch, clear personal medium impact safety glasses, and some safety goggles (look like ski-goggles) that fit over a pear of glasses. Good hardware stores will stock either of these for less than $20.
You’ll also need small cutting pliers and possibly some other types of pliers, all again easily acquired from a hardware store.

We purchased the soldering kit after our son did the Mirobot workshops at school. He loved the idea of soldering and the kit is set up to maximise safety and minimise the tricky parts of soldering for little hands. Highly recommend it – good value for money.
