Description

Afonso de Albuquerque established the 16^th century Portuguese trading empire in India and established Portugal as a significant trading presence in the Indian Ocean. He was the first European to reach the spice islands in South-East Asia, and sent ships to establish trade with China. He laid the groundwork for Portugal’s strong position in trade with the East through into the 17^th century.

This resource examines Albuquerque’s life and the significance of his achievements in the history of the region. It aligns with Year 6 Australian Curriculum History, Geography and HASS.
