Description
Afonso de Albuquerque established the 16th century Portuguese trading empire in India and established Portugal as a significant trading presence in the Indian Ocean. He was the first European to reach the spice islands in South-East Asia, and sent ships to establish trade with China. He laid the groundwork for Portugal’s strong position in trade with the East through into the 17th century.
