Description

The man after whom the Torres Strait is named, Luis Vaz de Torres, is a rather enigmatic figure in history, as not much is known about him. He sailed from Spain in 1605 as part of an expedition to search for the Southern Continent and ended up in command after bad weather separated the fleet. Trying to make his way to the Philippines, he found the Torres Strait, and would have sighted the northern tip of the Australian continent, but did not recognise what it was, thinking that it was merely an island. However, it was his subsequent report which led to his name being later given to the strait between Australia and New Guinea, which he was the first European to sail through.

This resource explores his life and achievements and is aligned with Year 4 and 6 Australian Curriculum History, Geography and HASS.
