This activity is designed to give students a first-hand example of Australian democracy, whilst exploring some of the historical aspects of our democratic process, including the use of secret ballot, ballot boxes, election officers and preferential voting.
This resource is designed to complement the Running A Class Election activity and gives a brief historical overview of voting by a show of hands, as well as a quick activity developed to encourage students to think about the advantages and disadvantages of this method of voting.
Everything you need to hold a class election (2 activity and 5 resource PDFs), including full preferential voting assisted by excellent AEC resources which allow you to print customised ballot papers, etc. Students run a political campaign, whilst learning about Australia’s electoral system and its contribution to the world’s democratic history. Candidates negotiate with the teacher to offer an election promise they can deliver if they are elected (such as a class party, a day without homework, or something else).
