Description
The Irish have an especially long, and important, history in Australia. At the time that the British created their penal settlement in New South Wales, they were facing strong resistance from the Irish in Ireland. Many Irish convicts, most of them political prisoners, were sent to Australia. These Irish people made a huge impact on the colony, even staging a rebellion in the early years of the 19th century. Later many Irish migrants came to Australia during the Great Famine in Ireland. Aspects of the Irish national character have become part of Australian society, and many values are shared. This resource, part of our ‘Migrants’ series examines the history and contributions of Irish people in Australia through time.
This resource aligns with Year 4, 5 and 6 Australian Curriculum History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship and HASS.
