Description

This resource explores the Islander people who arrived in Australia, especially Queensland, during the colonial period, and who were mostly sent back in the early 20th century.

Many people were brought to Australia, and specifically to Queensland, from the Pacific Islands, to work on the sugar plantations in the 19th century. Most of these Islanders were sent back in 1906, after laws were changed at Federation, however, some Islander people stayed. These Islander populations formed the core of Islander communities in Australia which grew larger again during the 20th century.

This resource is designed to complement the Year 5 Australian History and Geography curricula.
