In 1506 a Portuguese expedition to the East sailed through the South Atlantic Ocean and discovered a group of islands. The leader of the expedition named the main island after himself and it still bears his name. He was Tristão da Cunha and the island’s name has been Anglicised to ‘Tristan da Cunha’.
