Pedro Álvares Cabral was a Portuguese explorer, who became the first European to reach South America in the year 1500. Cabral was actually trying to sail to India by going south of Africa and during his voyage went a little too far west. The discovery of South America was significant and later led to Brazil becoming a Portuguese colony.
