The rivalry between England and Spain in the 15th to 18th centuries is fundamental to an understanding of how England came to establish colonies in other parts of the world, such as Australia. This resource explains how Spain followed Portugal in the voyages of exploration and their contribution to the conditions in Europe at the time.

This resource complements the resource Europe in the ‘Age of Discovery’, by considering the situation for Spain in particular, giving extra background to the situation which eventually led to the European settlement in Australia.
